As the name implies, this product is generally used on steep embankments up to 60 degrees (for erosion control). The product is a course grind that lasts several years and is excellent for slopes up to 60 degrees and walking trails.

This very popular mulch is the by-product of a lumber mill that produces red oak flooring. When fresh, the color is a light almost orange-brown color that will darken over several months. An important quality of this shredded hardwood is its ability to "mat-down" producing a surface resistant to washing away. It also permits raking or blowing leaves off of the mulch without removing large quantities of the mulch in the process. Red Oak is excellent for slopes up to 45 degrees and for walking trails

Because cypress wood is porous, soft, long lasting and dries out quickly. It is considered by many as the premier play area material.

You probably don't want to use pine bark in areas where you have a lot of leaf-litter or falling pine needles. Pine bark does not pack down so raking or blowing debris off will be difficult.
